Horse riding in Hurghada is a quiet way to see the landscape between the Red Sea and the mountains. No engines, no dust clouds: just you, the horse and open ground. We pick you up at your hotel and drive you to the riding centre. The team introduces you to the horses, gives a safety briefing and shows you how to handle your horse. Then you ride out with an instructor or guide. Depending on the package, the route crosses desert scenery, mountain surroundings, open landscapes or coastal areas, with stops for photos. Horse riding in Hurghada for beginners

Most of our horse-riding guests have never ridden, or only rode once as a child. That is normal, and the ride is set up for it. At the riding centre the team introduces you to the horses before anyone gets on. The instructor then explains the basics: how to sit, how to hold the reins, how to stop and turn, and the rules for riding in a group. Safety equipment is provided where required. On the ride itself, the instructor or guide stays with you and adjusts the route and riding style to the least experienced person in the group. If you are confident and want more, tell the team at the start; if you feel nervous, say so too. Nobody is pushed beyond what they are comfortable with. Three tips from our side:

• Relax your shoulders and let the horse do the walking. Gripping hard tires you out fast.
• Look where you want to go, not at the horse's head.
• Keep your phone in a zipped pocket and only take photos at the stops.

Desert or sea: where do you ride?

Hurghada has an unusual setting for riding: the Red Sea on one side and the bare Red Sea Mountains of the Eastern Desert on the other, with open ground in between. Depending on the package, your route can include desert scenery, mountain views, open landscapes or coastal areas. Some riders want the desert, some want the coast, and some want a bit of both. Tell us what you are hoping for when you book and we will confirm which route is available on your date. Routes always depend on the weather and the operator's safety rules. What to wear and bring for horse riding

Comfort matters more than style in the saddle.

• Long trousers are recommended. Shorts let the saddle and stirrup leathers rub your legs.
• Closed, comfortable shoes with a small heel work best. Avoid sandals and flip-flops.
• Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. There is little shade on the route.
• A water bottle and a camera. Keep both secure so you have your hands free.

Tie long hair back, and leave loose scarves and dangling jewellery at the hotel. If you have back problems, are pregnant or have any other health concern, tell us before booking so we can check with the riding centre whether the ride is suitable. Light, breathable fabrics are best, and a thin long-sleeved top protects your arms from the sun. Sunglasses with a strap are useful so they do not fall off when you look down. If you wear contact lenses, bring your glasses as a backup in case of dust.
