What is the Hurghada Museum Tour?

The Hurghada Museum brings Egyptian history to the Red Sea coast. It opened on 29 February 2020 as the first museum on the Red Sea coast to display antiquities, and its collection spans more than 5,000 years: Pharaonic, Greco-Roman, Coptic, Islamic and modern Egypt.

Highlights include a statue of Queen Meritamun, daughter of Ramesses II, ancient cosmetics, jewellery and wigs from a gallery on the idea of beauty in Egypt, everyday objects, and pieces from the royal family of the early 20th century. There is also a section on the heritage of the Red Sea region itself.

It is ideal if you are curious about ancient Egypt but do not want a long day trip to Luxor or Cairo, and it is a good indoor option on a very hot day. We pick you up at your hotel, your entrance ticket is included, and you explore at your own pace.

What you'll see inside the Hurghada Museum

The museum is set out over two floors and organised by themes rather than strict dates, which makes it easy to enjoy even if you are not a history expert. Sources put the collection at between 1,000 and about 2,000 pieces, drawn from storerooms in the Red Sea region and museums across Egypt.

  • Beauty and luxury. A central theme of the museum: ancient wigs, cosmetics, perfume containers and jewellery that show how Egyptians cared about appearance thousands of years ago.
  • Royal statuary. The best-known piece is a statue of Queen Meritamun, daughter of Ramesses II, considered one of the museum's masterpieces.
  • Daily life. Cooking utensils, furniture, sports and games, and musical instruments.
  • Coptic and Islamic Egypt. Coptic icons and later religious and decorative objects.
  • Modern royal Egypt. Jewellery, gold pieces and paintings linked to the Muhammad Ali dynasty, including a painting of Princess Fatima Ismail.
  • Red Sea heritage. A section on the monuments and culture of the Red Sea governorate, including finds from the Wadi Hammamat area.

Exhibits can change, so treat this as a guide to the collection, not a guaranteed list.

Good to know before your museum visit

Location. The museum stands on El Nasr Road, Hurghada's main road, so it is easy to reach from most hotels. Our transfer takes care of that.

A modern museum. It was built in partnership with the private sector, the first museum in Egypt opened this way, and is managed by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. Expect modern, well-lit galleries rather than a dusty old hall.

How long. Our trip takes about 2–3 hours including hotel transfers, which gives you a relaxed visit. Families with younger children may move faster; history fans will use every minute.

Photos. Photography is allowed where the museum permits it; rules can change, so follow the signs and staff.

Guide. A guide is not included unless arranged in your package. If you would like the story behind the objects, ask us when booking.

Pair it with a visit to the Hurghada Grand Aquarium on another day for a full family programme off the water.
