What is the Kite Surfing in Hurghada?
Kite surfing in Hurghada is one of the Red Sea's best-known water sports, and for good reason. The coast gets a steady wind from the north and north-west for much of the year, the water stays warm, and the area around Hurghada, El Gouna and Soma Bay has a mix of shallow lagoons and open water.
We arrange sessions for two kinds of guest. Beginners start on the beach with kite control and safety, and only move into the water when the instructor is happy. Experienced riders get equipment matched to their level and ride in the center's designated area.
Every package includes a professional instructor, kite-surfing equipment for your level, safety gear and a safety briefing, with hotel transfer according to the package. Kite surfing depends entirely on the wind, so plan it early in your holiday.

What to bring
Best time for kite surfing in Hurghada
The Hurghada coast is known for a dominant north to north-westerly wind. Kite spot guides list May to October as high season, when the wind is most consistent, with March, April and November as mid-season. Winter still has plenty of kiteable days, just less reliably.
The water stays above about 20°C all year and reaches around 28°C in summer, so a shorty or a light wetsuit is often enough outside the coolest months.
Because every session depends on the wind on the day, book kite surfing early in your stay. If a day is too light or too strong, there is time to move it.
Wind strength matters as much as the season. Beginners learn best in moderate, steady wind on flat water; strong afternoon gusts are better left to experienced riders. Your instructor checks the forecast and the conditions on the beach before every session and decides what is safe for your level. Trust that call; it is what keeps kite surfing safe.
Kite spots around Hurghada: lagoons, El Gouna and Soma Bay
The wider Hurghada area has several types of kite spot. Shallow lagoons are the classic beginner setting: you can stand up, flat water makes first rides easier, and instructors can stay close. Open water spots suit confident riders who want waves and space.
El Gouna, north of Hurghada, has several lagoons with different levels of difficulty. Soma Bay, to the south, is known for a large shallow lagoon and consistent wind; there, rescue-boat services are compulsory because of the offshore wind direction.
One practical tip from local spot guides: at low tide some lagoons get very shallow, so beginners may walk out further before a water start. Your center chooses the spot and teaching area that suits your level and the day's conditions; we confirm the location when you book. Combine it with an El Gouna day trip if you want to see the town.
Wherever you ride, stay inside the center's marked area and follow the right-of-way rules your instructor explains.
How long does it take to learn? IKO levels explained
Kite surfing is learned in steps, not in one go. The International Kiteboarding Organization (IKO), the main teaching standard, splits beginner training into three levels:
- Level 1, Discovery: roughly 2–4 hours. Theory, safety, setting up and flying a trainer kite and a real kite on the beach.
- Level 2, Intermediate: roughly 6–8 hours. Body-dragging in the water, safety self-rescue and first board starts.
- Level 3, Independent: riding, controlling speed and staying upwind.
Most beginners need around 8–12 hours of lessons to ride independently, depending on wind and talent. A short package is a great introduction; standing up and riding usually takes a full course. Tell us your goal and we confirm the right package and hours.
If you are staying a week, spreading lessons over several days usually works better than one long session.
Whatever level you reach, your instructor can note your progress so you can continue with another school later. Ask us whether your package includes an IKO certification card.
Questions about this trip
How much does kite surfing cost in Hurghada?
Our kite-surfing package is listed at €250. It includes a professional instructor, equipment for your level, safety gear, a safety briefing and hotel transfer according to the package. The exact package, number of hours and whether the price is per person or per session are confirmed with you before booking.
Can complete beginners kite surf in Hurghada?
Yes. Beginners start on the beach with safety, kite handling and basic kite control, then progress to the water when the instructor is ready. Shallow lagoons in the area are ideal for learning. Participants must meet the operator's age, weight and swimming-ability requirements.
When is the best season for kite surfing in Hurghada?
Spot guides rate May to October as the most consistent wind season, with March, April and November as mid-season. The wind mainly blows from the north and north-west. Winter still has kiteable days, but fewer. Sessions always depend on the wind on the day.
How long does it take to learn kite surfing?
Using the IKO system, a Discovery level takes about 2–4 hours and the Intermediate level about 6–8 hours. Most people need around 8–12 hours of lessons to ride independently. One short package is an introduction; riding confidently usually takes a full course.
Do I need to be a good swimmer?
You need basic swimming ability and to be comfortable in the sea. Operators set swimming-ability requirements because part of learning happens in the water, even with a life jacket or impact vest. Tell us honestly about your swimming level and the instructor will plan the session around it.
What if there's no wind?
Kite surfing depends entirely on wind and weather. If conditions are too light, too strong or unsafe, the instructor may change, postpone or cancel the session. If it is cancelled, you can choose a free new date, a full refund, or a credit for another trip. Book early in your holiday so we can move your session to a better day.
El Gouna or Soma Bay: where will I kite?
Both are known kite areas near Hurghada: El Gouna has several lagoons of different difficulty, and Soma Bay has a large shallow lagoon with compulsory rescue services. Your center and spot depend on the package and conditions; we confirm the location and transfer when you book.
