PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course in Hurghada
Five adventure dives with a PADI Instructor — deep and navigation plus three you choose — to build experience and dive beyond 18 metres.
The PADI Advanced Open Water course in Hurghada includes 5 adventure dives, with the Deep and Navigation dives required. You need the PADI Open Water Diver certification or an equivalent, and the minimum age is 12; the maximum depth depends on age. Instructor, tanks, weights and course materials are included per package. The schedule follows the PADI course schedule; the price is on request.
What is the PADI Advanced Open Water Course?
Already an Open Water diver? The PADI Advanced Open Water course in Hurghada is the next step, and despite the name it isn't only for advanced divers. You can start it right after Open Water.
The course is built from adventure dives. Before each one your instructor covers the theory and skills for that specialty, then you dive it together in the Red Sea and practise with feedback. PADI makes two dives compulsory — Deep and Underwater Navigation — and you choose three more.
When you finish you earn the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification. Depending on your age, it lets you dive to a maximum of 30 m / 100 ft. Each adventure dive can also count towards the matching PADI specialty certification.
The exact dives and schedule are agreed with your instructor before you start, based on your experience, the weather and sea conditions.
- Five adventure dives with a qualified PADI Instructor
- Deep dive below 18 m and underwater navigation with a compass
- Pick three more — options include buoyancy, wreck and drift
- Short theory briefing before every dive
- Each dive can count towards a PADI specialty
- Includes the Navigation dive you need for Rescue Diver
Who it's for
The program, step by step
- 1
Registration & briefing
Meet your PADI Instructor and register. They review your certification and diving experience and walk you through how the course works.

Before each adventure dive, your instructor covers the theory and skills for that specialty — dive planning, navigation, buoyancy control, deep diving procedures, environmental awareness and anything specific to the dive.
- 3
Adventure dives
Complete the required adventure dives under instructor supervision. Depending on the programme, dives may include deep diving, underwater navigation, peak performance buoyancy, wreck diving, drift diving or other available adventure dives. The exact specialties are confirmed with your instructor before the course.
- 4
Practical training
On every dive you practise that specialty's skills while your instructor guides you and gives feedback.
- 5

What to bring
Open Water vs Advanced Open Water: what changes
Open Water teaches you the basics. Advanced Open Water gives you experience, under supervision, in the kinds of diving you'll actually want to do.
Depth. Open Water divers are trained to 18 m / 60 ft. On Advanced you make a deep dive below 18 m, and the certification allows a maximum of up to 30 m / 100 ft depending on your age.
Navigation. You learn to use a compass and natural features to find your way back to the boat — probably the most useful skill on the course.
Choice. The other three dives are up to you and your instructor. PADI's list includes Peak Performance Buoyancy, Wreck, Night, Fish Identification, Underwater Naturalist, Search & Recovery, Digital Underwater Photography and Enriched Air Nitrox, among others. Which ones are possible depends on the conditions and what the centre runs that week, so we confirm your options before you start.
Format. There's less classroom than on Open Water. Theory comes as a short briefing before each dive, or through PADI eLearning at home — PADI estimates 6–8 hours online and 2–3 days for the whole course.
Why Hurghada works for Advanced Open Water
The Red Sea around Hurghada gives you real variety close to town: sheltered reefs for buoyancy work, sandy areas where navigation exercises are easy to set up, and deeper walls and wrecks for the deep dive.
One local example is El Mina, a former minesweeper lying on its side inside Hurghada harbour, with the bow at about 26 m and the stern at about 33 m. Further out, sites like the sandy plateau off Small Giftun sit at around 15–25 m. Your instructor decides where each dive happens based on wind, current and your level — we never promise a particular site in advance.
The water stays warm all year: about 22 °C at its coolest in February and about 29 °C in August, so the course isn't limited to summer.
Advanced is also the natural lead-in to bigger trips. Many divers do it before a Red Sea diving safari, where deep and wreck dives are common, or keep diving afterwards on our full-day diving trip.
Next steps: Rescue Diver and beyond
The Underwater Navigation dive you complete on Advanced is one of the prerequisites for the PADI Rescue Diver course. The other is Emergency First Response (EFR) Primary and Secondary Care training — first aid and CPR — completed within the last 24 months.
From Rescue Diver, divers who want to work in diving move on to Divemaster, which needs 40 logged dives to start. Every dive you log on this course counts.
Not ready for more training? That's fine too. With an Advanced certification you can join deeper, more varied dives on our full-day diving trip, book a private diving trip with your own guide, or spend several days on the reefs and wrecks further offshore on a Red Sea diving safari. Each specialty adventure dive you completed can also be credited toward the full PADI specialty course later, so nothing you do on Advanced is wasted.

Questions about this trip
How many dives are in the Advanced Open Water course?
Five adventure dives. PADI makes two compulsory — Deep and Underwater Navigation — and you choose three more with your instructor, from options such as peak performance buoyancy, wreck, drift or night diving. Which options are available depends on conditions and the centre's programme, and is confirmed before your course.
Can I do Advanced Open Water straight after Open Water?
Yes. The prerequisite is PADI Open Water Diver, Junior Open Water Diver or a qualifying certification from another agency. Many divers go straight from one course to the next while their skills are fresh. Bring your certification card and logbook.
How deep can I dive after Advanced Open Water?
The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification allows a maximum depth of up to 30 metres / 100 feet, depending on your age. On the course itself you make a deep dive below 18 metres with your instructor, learning how to plan it and manage depth safely.
What is the minimum age for Advanced Open Water?
PADI's minimum age is 12, and the maximum depth you're allowed depends on your age. Students need an Open Water Diver, Junior Open Water Diver or qualifying certification. The instructor confirms eligibility before the course starts, so send the student's age and current certification when you enquire.
How long does the Advanced Open Water course take?
There's no fixed length — it follows the PADI course schedule. PADI estimates 2–3 days for the whole course and 6–8 hours if you do the theory through eLearning. Your schedule in Hurghada depends on the weather, sea conditions and instructor availability.
Is Nitrox included?
No. Nitrox (enriched air) is not included in the course price. Enriched Air Nitrox is one of the adventure dives PADI offers on the course. If it interests you, ask us when you book and we'll confirm availability and any extra cost. Remember the Deep and Navigation dives are compulsory, so Nitrox would be one of your three choices.
Do I need Advanced Open Water for Rescue Diver?
You need the Underwater Navigation dive, which is part of Advanced Open Water, plus Emergency First Response (first aid and CPR) training within the last 24 months. Completing Advanced in Hurghada covers the navigation requirement. If your first-aid training is older than two years, tell us when you enquire so we can plan around it.
How much does the course cost?
The price is on request because it depends on your package. Send us your preferred start date, number of students, current certification, number of logged dives, hotel name and any adventure dives you'd like on WhatsApp, and we'll reply with availability, schedule and final price.
