Things to do in Hurghada besides the beach
Hurghada grew up around the reef, so most activities happen on the water. But there are good land-based options, and they are ideal for a rest day between boat trips.
A town that feels different. El Gouna, about 20–25 km north, is a planned resort town founded in 1990, built across a network of lagoons and islands. Its architecture is inspired by traditional rural Egyptian and Nubian houses, and it is easy to spend a full day between Abu Tig Marina and the cafés of Downtown.
Marine life without the mask. The Hurghada Grand Aquarium opened in 2015 and is described as Egypt's largest. A 24-metre walk-through tunnel puts sharks and rays right above your head.
Egyptian history on the Red Sea. The Hurghada Museum opened in February 2020. It is the first museum on the Red Sea coast to display antiquities, and its collection covers Pharaonic, Greco-Roman, Coptic, Islamic and modern Egypt.
Family fun. For kids, add the Jungle Water Park (€50) or a glass boat or submarine trip (€30). For the desert side of Hurghada, see our desert safaris.
