What is the difference between a mountain safari and a super safari?

On a Hurghada desert safari, a mountain safari is a ride-along trip: an off-road drive, a Bedouin-style village, tea and a short camel ride, with no driving. A super safari adds a quad bike ride and, on selected packages, dinner and an evening show. In our price data the mountain safari is EUR 35 per person; the super safari is on request.

A quad bike is a four-wheeled all-terrain vehicle that you ride astride and steer with handlebars. "Super safari" is a name operators use for combined packages, so the contents differ from one seller to the next. Check the inclusion list, not the title.

Our super safari is built around the quad. Some other listings add a short buggy ride, which is a small open off-road car. If you want one, ask us what is possible for your date.

What happens during a desert safari, step by step?

On our trips the day runs in a fixed order: hotel pickup, an off-road drive into the Eastern Desert, the main activity, a Bedouin-style village with tea, a camel ride, the sunset, and the drop-off at your hotel. Dinner and entertainment are added only on selected super safari packages.

  1. Pickup. The exact time depends on the departure and your hotel, and we confirm it after booking.
  2. Desert drive. The safari vehicle leaves Hurghada and goes off-road.
  3. Quad ride (super safari). A safety briefing comes first, then a ride on a designated route behind the guide.
  4. Village and camel. Tea, a look at local customs and a short camel ride.
  5. Sunset. Photo stop as the mountains change colour.
  6. Dinner and show (selected packages). We confirm the food and entertainment before you book.

Length varies by seller. Headout lists one safari at 7 hours, and Egyptra says its quad and buggy tours run 3 to 6 hours. The Abroad Guide describes the quad segment alone as 45 minutes. Ask us for the timings of your date.

How much does a Hurghada desert safari really cost?

The real cost is the headline price plus anything listed as "excluded": a safari or admission fee, a transfer surcharge from outlying resorts, photos, tips and food or drinks. Marketplace listings often show a low headline price and put these items in the small print, so compare totals, not headlines.

Questions to ask before you pay

  • Is a safari or admission fee paid separately in cash, and how much?
  • Is there a transfer surcharge for your hotel area?
  • Are quad or buggy time, dinner, show and drinks included, and for how long?

Our own data lists personal expenses, photos and videos, and tips as not included on all four desert trips. The EUR 35 mountain safari price includes hotel pickup and drop-off in Hurghada. Ask us to confirm whether any separate fee applies for your date and hotel.

Quad bike or buggy: which is better for first-timers?

Operators we read describe both as beginner-friendly: Egyptra says no licence is needed, rides stay on private desert tracks and there is a training lap. Age rules differ by seller, so confirm them for your group. Our super safari uses a quad after a safety briefing, with age limits set by the operator.

According to Egyptra, quad drivers are generally 16 or older, children from about 5 can ride as passengers on a quad with a parent, and buggies take passengers from age 3. The Abroad Guide also gives 16 and up for its quad safari. Headout's listing states no age, height or medical rules at all, which is why we suggest asking before you book.

For a family, the practical question is who drives. If only one adult wants to drive, the super safari still gives everyone else the village, camel ride and sunset. Give us each person's age when booking so we can confirm the rules.

Is the Bedouin dinner authentic?

It is a Bedouin-style visitor setting, not a remote nomad camp. You meet local Bedouins, drink tea and hear how people live in the desert. Dinner and evening entertainment, such as a Tanoura show, are included only on selected super safari packages, and we confirm them before booking.

Wikipedia describes Bedouins as pastorally semi-nomadic Arab tribes and says those in Egypt mostly live in Sinai, Matruh, the Red Sea governorate and other regions. The village visit is a short introduction to that culture. If authenticity matters to you, choose the calmer mountain safari, where tea and conversation are the focus, and skip the show.

Is a desert safari safe, and who should not go?

Desert safaris are safe when you follow the guide, ride the designated route and wear the right clothes, but they are bumpy. The Abroad Guide says its quad safari is not suitable for pregnant women or people with back or neck problems. Ask us before booking if either applies to you.

On our super safari the guide gives a safety briefing and you ride behind the guide on a set route. Route and duration depend on safety conditions, and guests must follow the guide's instructions. Our data says some activities have age, health or safety restrictions.

What should I wear and bring on a desert safari?

Wear comfortable clothing, closed shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat, and bring a camera and a light jacket for the evening. For a quad ride add long trousers and a scarf over your nose and mouth against dust. Horse riders should wear long trousers and avoid sandals.

Morning or sunset safari: which is better by season?

Sunset suits most seasons because the heat eases and the mountains turn orange, but winter evenings are cool. According to Wikipedia, Hurghada's mean daily maximum is 22.2 C in January and 37.4 C in July. Our trips run as half-day or evening departures, so ask which times operate on your date.

Wikipedia also lists a mean January minimum of 11.6 C and a record December low of 2.8 C. The desert cools quickly after sunset, so our data advises a light jacket on evening trips, especially from autumn to spring.

If you want a calm horseback hour instead of a motor trip, see horse riding for the daytime ride or sunset horse riding for the golden hour.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a desert safari in Hurghada?

Our Mountain Safari is EUR 35 per person including hotel pickup and drop-off. The Super Safari is priced on request because it depends on the package, for example with or without dinner and show. Other sellers list low headline prices with extra fees, so compare the total including fees and transfers.

Is dinner included in a Hurghada desert safari?

Only on selected packages. Our Super Safari includes a traditional dinner and evening entertainment only if the chosen package says so, and we confirm food and entertainment before you book. The Mountain Safari includes traditional tea and does not list dinner. Always check the inclusion list.

What is the minimum age for a quad bike in Hurghada?

It varies by operator. Egyptra says drivers are generally 16 or older, with children from about 5 riding as passengers on a quad with a parent, and The Abroad Guide also gives 16 and up. Our quad age limits are set by the operator, so give us each person's age when booking.

Is the mountain safari better than the super safari for families?

The mountain safari is easier for families who want a calm trip, because nobody drives. It includes the desert drive, village, tea and camel ride. The super safari suits groups with older children who want a quad ride. Children join subject to the operator's safety requirements, so send us their ages.

Can pregnant women or people with back problems go on a desert safari?

Ask first. The Abroad Guide says its quad safari is not suitable for pregnant women or people with back or neck problems because of the terrain. Our data says some activities have age, health or safety restrictions. Tell us before booking, and check with your doctor; the mountain safari is calmer.

What is the difference between horse riding and a safari?

Horse riding is a quiet, guided ride with an instructor who matches the horse and route to your level. A safari is a vehicle trip with a village visit and camel ride, and the super safari adds a quad. Sunset horse riding is timed for the golden hour with a photo stop.
