When is the best time to kitesurf in Hurghada?
The best time to kitesurf in Hurghada is May to October. According to thekitespot.com, thermal winds are predominant in those months, with 65-85% wind probability. March, April and November are mid-season. In the off-season, the same page says kiteable days still occur at least three to four days a week.
Wind probability is a forecast statistic, not a promise. Thekitespot.com counts a day as kiteable when wind reaches at least 4 Beaufort (11-16 knots) for three consecutive daylight hours.

|---|---|---|
| January | 55% | Off-season |

Why do sources disagree on the season?
Guides give slightly different windows. Thekitespot.com says May to October. Kitejungle.com says April to October. Sportif.travel says April to November for El Gouna. The overlap is clear: May to October is the safest window, and April and November are worth trying with flexible days.
Is Hurghada good for kitesurfing beginners?
Yes. Thekitespot.com describes Hurghada as having calm shallow lagoons for beginners, plus flat water, choppy sections and open water for stronger riders. It names Seahorse Bay as a vast shallow lagoon with calm, flat water. Beginners should still learn with an instructor, not alone.
One detail matters for lessons: at low tide, thekitespot.com says the water gets knee-deep, so beginners may walk further out for safe water starts. Your school picks the spot for the day.

Hurghada, El Gouna or Soma Bay: which kite spot?
All three suit beginners. Hurghada offers Seahorse Bay and Magawish. El Gouna has an IKO centre on Mangroovy Beach with flat water. Soma Bay has a vast shallow lagoon with no tidal influence, but rescue-boat service is mandatory because of offshore wind. Your school and package decide the spot.
| Spot | What the sources say | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Hurghada (Seahorse Bay, Magawish) | Seahorse Bay: vast shallow lagoon, calm flat water. Magawish: long sandy beach, reached by boat. | thekitespot.com |
| El Gouna (Mangroovy Beach) | Flat water with wind chop and some swell; cross-onshore wind mainly from the north; all levels; April to November is peak. | sportif.travel |
| Soma Bay | Vast shallow lagoon, flat water, sandy launch, no tidal influence; summer wind around 22 knots, 25-30 knots in afternoons (especially September); kites of 7-12 m typical. | thekitespot.com |
Kitejungle.com counts 189 wind days a year at Palm Beach Hurghada and 88 at Soma Bay, but it places Seahorse Bay in El Gouna while thekitespot.com places it in north Hurghada. Treat spot labels as approximate and ask the school where you ride. If you want to see El Gouna anyway, see our El Gouna day trip.

How many hours of lessons do you need to ride independently?
About 8-12 hours. In Motion Kitesurfing, a kite school, lists IKO Level 1 (Discovery) at 2-4 hours on land and Level 2 (Intermediate) at 6-8 hours on beach and water, and gives roughly 8-12 hours as the minimum to independence. Wind, fitness and progress change this.
IKO is the International Kiteboarding Organization, a certification body for kite instructors and riders. VDWS is a German water-sports association that also certifies kitesurfing courses.
What does each stage cover?
- Level 1, Discovery: theory, safety systems, trainer kite and kite handling on the beach.
- Level 2, Intermediate: kite control in the water and first board work.
- Level 3, Independent: riding on your own with advanced manoeuvres. The hours for this level were not given on the page we opened.
In Motion Kitesurfing states that its website does not replace lessons with an IKO certified instructor, and warns not to set up or fly a kite without a qualified instructor. A week-long stay lets you spread lessons over several days and keep spare days for calm weather.
How much do kitesurfing lessons cost in Hurghada?
Thekitespot.com lists 6 hours of kite lessons at €260 and 3 hours of gear rental at €45 in Hurghada. Our kite-surfing package is listed at €250 per package. Whether a package is per person, per session or per course, and how many hours it covers, is confirmed before booking.
| Offer | Figure | Whose figure |
|---|---|---|
| Kite lessons, 6 hours, Hurghada | €260 | thekitespot.com |
| Gear rental, 3 hours, Hurghada | €45 | thekitespot.com |
| Beginners course, 5 hours (Switzerland, for reference) | CHF 250 per person | kitesailing.ch |
| Divers Trips kite-surfing package | €250 per package, hours confirmed before booking | our price list |
Do not compare these as price per hour: the hours are different or not yet confirmed. Compare what is included instead.
What should a lesson price include?
Use this checklist when you compare offers:
- Number of hours, and whether it is per person or for a group.
- Instructor ratio, and whether the instructor works with you in the water or from the beach.
- Kite, bar, board and harness.
- Safety gear: helmet and buoyancy aid or impact vest. One Lake Garda school lists helmet and life jacket as included (theabroadguide.com), while kitesailing.ch lists equipment, neoprene and liability insurance and says each participant needs their own accident insurance.
- Certification: kitesailing.ch includes the VDWS theory book, theory exam and licence in its fee.
- Transfer, and what happens if the wind fails.
What wind, water temperature and wetsuit should you expect?
Expect 15-25 knots of north to north-west wind, water above 20 °C all year and up to 28 °C in summer. Thekitespot.com recommends rashguards or light wetsuits. The Soma Bay page gives air temperatures of 24 °C in winter and 32 °C or more in summer.
Thekitespot.com says high-season wind is 15-25 knots, while in the low season (November to April) riders should bring larger kites of 12 m or more, or consider hydrofoiling. Beginners rarely choose their own kite size, because the instructor does.
For general weather planning, see our guide to the best time to visit Hurghada.
What safety rules do instructors follow?
VDWS course material says to kite only when wind stays within Beaufort force 4-5, never to kite in gusty wind, and never to kite alone. It also asks for at least three line lengths of landing space and a working quick release. Thekitespot.com adds that kiteboarding is prohibited after 5 pm.
- Check the wind on shore and further offshore before starting (VDWS).
- Check that lines are secure, the quick release works and the board leash is strong enough (VDWS).
- Choose a spot with enough downwind room and no obstacles upwind (VDWS).
- At Soma Bay, a rescue boat is mandatory (thekitespot.com).
- In an emergency, pull the quick release and use the equipment as flotation (VDWS).
