Is Hurghada safe for tourists right now?
Most governments treat Hurghada as a destination where visitors can travel with normal precautions. The UK FCDO's list of areas it advises against does not include Hurghada or the Red Sea resorts. Canada asks travellers to exercise a high degree of caution there. Advisories change, and no source can guarantee safety.
What the advisories say (read on 5 and 7 October 2026)
An advisory is an official government warning that rates the risk of travelling to a country or region. We opened three live pages. The US State Department, Australia's Smartraveller and Russian Foreign Ministry pages would not load for us, so we do not quote them.
| Source | What it says | Date shown |
|---|---|---|
| UK FCDO, Egypt travel advice | Lists areas it advises against, such as North Sinai, the Egypt-Libya border strip and parts of the Western Desert. Hurghada and the Red Sea resorts are not on that list. It also says terrorist attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreign nationals, with extra measures at tourist sites. | Main page updated 4 August 2026 |
| Government of Canada, Egypt travel advice | Risk level "Exercise a high degree of caution (with regional advisories)". It names Hurghada among Red Sea coastal resorts where a high degree of caution applies, and says tour operators may not meet Canadian safety standards. | 26 May 2026 |
| German Federal Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt), Egypt travel and security advice | A partial travel warning for the north of the Sinai Peninsula, the Egyptian-Israeli border area (except Taba) and remote parts of the Sahara. Hurghada and the Red Sea resorts are not covered, but it asks for particular caution everywhere in Egypt, including the Red Sea tourist areas. | Updated 7 October 2026 |
The German Federal Foreign Office also notes repeated serious accidents with tourist and diving boats. Its page lists 126 and 122 for the tourist and local police. The FCDO also warns that your travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against its advice. Check the pages again before you fly, because wording and dates change.
Is Hurghada safe at night and in which areas?
Busy tourist areas are generally considered comfortable at night, with sensible precautions. The FCDO says the crime rate in Egypt is generally low and asks for the same care you would take at home. Use hotel or app-booked taxis after dark and avoid isolated streets. Area rankings below are one site's opinion, not official data.
Travel-safety site isitsafetovisit.com (updated 17 March 2026) rates Sahl Hasheesh, El Gouna and the Marina as the safest areas. It advises caution in El Dahar old town because of crowds and hustlers. It publishes no crime statistics, and neither do we.
What are the most common scams in Hurghada?
The usual ones are airport transfer overcharging, unofficial guides who offer help and then ask for money, inflated restaurant bills and unattended beach belongings. According to isitsafetovisit.com, taxis should use meters or have a price agreed first. The FCDO warns of scammers and touts in tourist areas.
- Agree a taxi fare before you get in, or use a ride-hailing app or your hotel taxi.
- Confirm the price, inclusions and pickup point of any trip in writing before you pay.
- Be wary of anyone who approaches you at arrivals claiming to represent your tour operator.
Is Hurghada safe for solo women and families?
Many women and families visit Hurghada, but harassment and assault are risks that official sources mention. The FCDO says sexual assaults have been reported to the British Embassy, including cases involving minors, mostly in Red Sea tourist resorts and often by someone the victim had already met. Take precautions.
The FCDO advises women to take care when travelling alone, especially at night in taxis, and to share driver details and live location with a friend. Canada says foreign women are frequently subject to unwanted male attention and verbal abuse. Modest dress and hotel-arranged transport reduce attention, according to isitsafetovisit.com.
For families, children must wear life jackets on our boats according to the captain's instructions. Send us each child's age when you ask for a quote so we can confirm what suits them.

Is it safe to swim, snorkel and dive in Hurghada?
Sea trips can be done safely, but standards differ between operators. The FCDO states that safety standards of Red Sea resort diving operators and boats vary considerably, and reports recent incidents involving British nationals on diving boats and tours, some fatal. Choosing a careful operator matters more than choosing a beach.
Boats, briefings and conditions
A safety briefing is a short talk before the activity covering rules, signals and what to do if something goes wrong. On our trips, dives, private boats, parasailing, kite surfing, quad biking and horse riding start with one. Non-swimmers and children can snorkel with a life jacket on.
Wildlife and reef rules
The FCDO notes that shark attacks are rare, but there have been attacks on tourists in the Red Sea region. HEPCA, the Hurghada environmental association, asks visitors to follow coral reef guidelines and avoid disturbing or harassing wildlife. On our trips the rule is simple: never stand on or touch coral, and never touch, feed or chase dolphins.

How do you choose a safe boat operator?
Ask direct questions before paying and walk away from vague answers. Canada advises checking equipment condition, hiring experienced guides from reputable companies, getting activity details, buying travel insurance and confirming you are fit for the activity. These steps apply to any boat trip, ours included.
| Ask this | A good answer sounds like |
|---|---|
| Is there a safety briefing? | Yes, before the activity, with life jackets shown. |
| What are the group size and boat? | A set maximum for the vessel, not "as many as fit". |
| Who is in charge in the water? | A named guide or instructor, with qualifications you can ask about. |
| What if the weather turns? | The captain may change or cancel the plan, with a stated refund or reschedule rule. |
| What is included and excluded? | A written list, including any separate park or environmental fees. |
Is it safe to drive or ride quads in Hurghada?
Treat roads and quad bikes with care. The FCDO says accidents are common because of variable road conditions, dangerous driving and poor enforcement, and advises against driving outside main cities and resorts at night. It also reports several serious quad bike accidents involving British nationals in resort areas.
A guided desert trip with a driver avoids most of this risk. Our Mountain Safari costs €35 per person and a quad bike is not included unless the chosen package says so. Some activities have age, health or safety restrictions.
What health risks should you plan for?
The main practical risks for visitors are sun and dehydration, plus the cost of treatment if you fall ill. WHO advises sun protection when the UV index reaches 3 or higher: seek shade at midday, and wear a hat and sunscreen. Boat days add time in open sun.
- Sun: bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Our trip pages suggest reef-safe sunscreen if you have it.
- Medical care: the FCDO says some hotel doctors have overcharged, and that pharmacies outside hotels often charge less. Keep receipts for your insurer.
- Medicines: some prescription and over-the-counter medicines are controlled in Egypt, so check before you travel.
- Insurance: the FCDO asks for cover that includes local treatment and medical evacuation.

What are the emergency numbers in Egypt?
The FCDO says to phone the tourist police on 126 to report a crime, and to call 123 and ask for an ambulance. The 112 number comes from a secondary source. Save them in your phone, and ask your hotel reception to confirm which to use, because pages can list different numbers.
| Service | Number | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Tourist police | 126 | UK FCDO, German Federal Foreign Office |
| Ambulance | 123 | UK FCDO |
| Police | 122 | German Federal Foreign Office |
| General emergency | 112 | isitsafetovisit.com |
