Three Red Sea resorts, three different kinds of diving. Here is how they compare, with sources and with the disagreements left in.

· Facts last verified · Written by Magdy · Diving Guides

This Hurghada vs Sharm vs Marsa Alam diving comparison comes from a Hurghada operator, so we know Hurghada best. For Sharm el Sheikh and Marsa Alam we rely on the sources named, and we do not sell trips there.

Which Red Sea resort is best for diving?

Where do the sources disagree?

They disagree on several numbers and on tone. We list the main conflicts instead of picking a winner, so you can weigh them. None of the sources is a measurement; most are operator or travel-blog opinions.

  • Distance Hurghada to Marsa Alam: PADI says about 300 km; flyings.net says roughly 200 km. Ask any transfer provider for the exact time.
  • Sea temperature: circledivers.com says Hurghada is 1-2 °C warmer than Sharm (22-29 °C against 21-28 °C). The seatemperature.info averages show August at 29.1 °C in Hurghada and 29.5 °C in Sharm, and 30.0 °C in Marsa Alam. The gap is small either way.
  • Visibility: circledivers.com gives 20-40 m for both Hurghada and Sharm, with Hurghada's coastal sites sometimes dropping to 15 m after wind. Flyings.net claims 25-40 m in Marsa Alam and blames northern boat traffic. That page openly favours Marsa Alam.
  • Elphinstone: PADI's dive-site page puts it about 12 km from Marsa Alam; liveaboard.com says about 30 km. Shark season is September-November on PADI's page and October-December on liveaboard.com.
  • Thistlegorm depth: liveaboard.com says 20-30 m; PADI's top-sites list says 35 m maximum.
  • Dolphin House: circledivers.com lists it under Hurghada, while PADI and flyings.net place Dolphin House (Shaab Samadai) at Marsa Alam.

What is diving in Hurghada really like?

Hurghada diving is mostly done from day boats, according to PADI. Divingaround.com says many reefs are shallow and calm, with depths under 18 m at El Fanous, Abu Ramada and the Giftun Islands. The honest limits are crowds and wrecks that are far away.

PADI calls Hurghada busier and more action-packed than other Red Sea resorts. Inyourpocket.com says it grew from a fishing village into the region's largest resort town. Divingaround.com says the Thistlegorm needs a liveaboard from here.

Our guide to the best dive sites in Hurghada covers reefs by level. For timing, see the best time to dive in Hurghada.

What is diving in Sharm el Sheikh really like?

Sharm el Sheikh is known for walls and strong currents. Circledivers.com describes vertical precipices that plunge hundreds of metres. Ras Mohammed National Park is the headline: PADI's list rates Shark and Yolanda Reef as advanced, and the Straits of Tiran also demand experience.

Circledivers.com says Ras Mohammed and Tiran have moderate to strong tidal currents, while Hurghada's leeward sites are calmer. It also calls Sharm more diving-focused and compact. Beginners are not excluded: circledivers.com names Ras Umm Sid as perfect for all levels.

What is diving in Marsa Alam really like?

Marsa Alam is the quietest and least developed of the three, according to PADI. Its reputation rests on dugongs, turtles, reef sharks and house reefs you can enter from the beach. It is also the closest base for the far-south sites.

Abu Dabbab is rated beginner level on PADI's list, with dugongs and turtles in 20 m or less. Elphinstone is different: liveaboard.com says it is not a beginner site, expects Advanced Open Water with roughly 30-50 logged dives, and warns of currents above two knots.

Which is best for beginners, families and PADI courses?

Hurghada is the safest default for first-timers, and circledivers.com calls it the most accessible and beginner-friendly of the three. Marsa Alam also works for gentle shore diving. Sharm is possible with shallow training sites. A PADI Open Water course follows the same standards in all three places.

PADI sets a minimum age of 10 for Open Water, as covered in our PADI Open Water course guide. For families, TUI says Hurghada offers more excursions and aquaparks, while Marsa Alam offers shorter transfers from its airport to some hotel areas and quieter surroundings.

Which is best for wrecks and the Thistlegorm?

For the Thistlegorm, Sharm el Sheikh is closer. According to liveaboard.com, day boats from Sharm sail about four hours each way, leaving around 4 am and returning at 5-6 pm. From Hurghada it is usually a liveaboard trip. Marsa Alam is far from the northern wrecks.

Abu Nuhas, north of Shadwan Island, is about 3-4 hours' sailing from Hurghada, so it is also a liveaboard or special-trip destination. Both ports serve northern wreck itineraries, and the best choice depends on the route.

Do liveaboards change the choice?

Yes. A liveaboard is a dive boat you sleep on, so you reach sites no day boat can. Liveaboard.com says the Thistlegorm departs mostly from Sharm and also from Hurghada. Inyourpocket.com says Marsa Alam airport is the closest for southern departures. Flyings.net says Rocky Island and Zabargad are liveaboard-only.

How does Divers Trips handle this?

We run Hurghada only. Our full-day diving trip costs €60 per person: hotel pickup, two guided dives, equipment, tanks and weights, a snorkel stop, lunch and soft drinks. Park or environmental fees are separate; we confirm any fee after booking.

The PADI Open Water course and the diving safari are priced on request, because the price depends on the package and boat. Safari routes include northern wrecks and the offshore reefs, and the route is confirmed per departure. See our diving in Hurghada page, then book online or contact us.
